Since antiquity, leisure (otium) has often been legitimised as a free space for intellectual activities beyond professional obligations. The reason for Goethe's journey to Italy also stands in this tradition. Peter Philipp Riedl's study examines concrete forms of urban leisure in Goethe's Italian Journey, the Roman Carnival, the Roman Elegies and the Venetian Epigrams.
