Gadamer successfully established hermeneutics as a fundamental philosophical discipline. This finds confirmation in the fact that there are many attempts afoot, in different philosophical traditions, to steer hermeneutics in other directions than those privileged by Gadamer. This piece discusses some of these recent projects, especially those of Vittorio Hösle, Ingolf Dalferth, John Arthos and Jean Greisch, that endeavour to think through the metaphysical presuppositions and the ethical consequences of hermeneutics.
