otection of a mountain region worldwide that is binding under international law: for the first time a transnational mountain range has been deemed in its geographical continuity, to be a common territory facing common challenges. Alongside the legal framework of the Alpine Convention, a number of important ongoing activities seek to put into practice the commitments contained in the Convention and its Protocols. This article shows the state of ratification, the organization of the Alpine Convention and the main content of the treaties for the practice. It has got a focus on the current work and even a current decision of the Compliance Committee. The Compliance Committee is a body that controls if the commitments and obligations resulting from the Alpine Convention are complied with. This 2016 decision deals with Art. 11 of the Protocol »Nature protection and landscape conservation« and should have impact on the experience of the implementation of this rule in the contracting states. Art. 11 undertakes the contracting parties to preserve, manage and, where necessary, to extend the existing protected areas, in keeping with their protective function, and also to define, where possible, new protected areas. They shall take all appropriate measures to avoid impairing or destroying these areas.
