Seeking to unfold the value of the educational not only in practical theology, but in the context of theology as a whole, this essay presents the thesis that the idea of education constitutes both the range and lifeblood of Protestant Christianity, while also guaranteeing the unity of its theology. The Reformation and modernity's understanding of Protestant theology is based on the assumption that in processes of communication, faith and the church, each adjust and evolve anew. The processes of communication, exposition and education that are to be described not only refer to the resulting real diversity, but also to the constantly reforming unity of ideas about subjectivity. Constitutive here for a fundamental grasp of justification theology is the distinction between given personality and trained subjectivity, which is to be considered analogous to the relationship between faith and works.
