Beschreibung
As an authentic liturgical revolution, the Reformation had a profound impact on Christian worship. The widespread religious upheaval produced a multitude of different liturgical formularies which varied according to differing theological convictions and regional traditions. Yet certain common features reflective of specific theological insights were shared by all its strands. The present article identifies the three most important elements present in all Reformation churches. Firstly, the worship service had to be the locus of the explication of Holy Scripture, i.e., preaching. Secondly, the worship service was understood and performed as an event where the people's participation was essential, both as recipients and responders. Finally, it was defined and performed as an aural event.
