The present essay treats three instances of this debate: the renewal of the religion of the cross that Söderblom expected after World War I, the short-lived increase of interest in religion in Germany after World War II, and the worldwide surge of fundamentalism in recent times. Taking his stand with Söderblom's understanding of religion as the personal experience of being seized by holiness, he pleads for the individual's functioning as a leaven in God's ongoing work of renewal.
