The obligation to obtain a certain number of supporting signatures for election proposals has become the subject of several constitutional court decisions in the pandemic. The question is whether it is necessary to reduce the number of signatures required or to extend the period of time for providing the signatures. This paper analyses and evaluates the established and current jurisprudence as well as recent legislative novels at federal and state level from a constitutional law perspective, and furthermore reflects the potentials for digitalizing German law of electoral nominations. Therefore, it is proposed to remove the requirement for handwritten signatures in support of an election proposal.
