The first witness to the existence of a group of seven so-called Catholic Epistles is Eusebius of Caesarea at the beginning of the fourth century. Taking into account intertextual relationships as well as data from reception history and the study of early Christian manuscripts, the essay describes possible motifs behind the development and canonization of this collection, which has been labeled »an odd mixture« (J.K. Elliott).
