This article addresses the figure of Sara in the context of the four generations of ancestresses in Genesis 12–36, 38. It understands the Genesis narratives not as a »collection of sagas« (H. Gunkel) but rather as »ways of worldmaking« (N. Goodman) in which women play an important role in the identity of the people. In seeing the figure of Sara as part of the ancestral narratives, the article also pursues historical markers for individual texts as well as for the entire narrative of the beginning of Israel.
