Summary
Manual private copying is not dangerous for authors and copyright holders, whereas private copies made automatically or digitally pose a major hazard for authors' rights. In December 2014, the 3. Josef Kohler-Symposion at the Humboldt University in Berlin was held to analyse the legal significance and consequences of private copying, its problems and possible solutions. The contributions to the conference published in this volume discuss the problems connected with private copying and with remuneration systems as a compensation for the use of copyrighted works from a practical as well as from a scholarly perspective. This introductory article reflects the papers and discussions of the conference by giving an account of some of its results as well as providing an overview on possible future developments in EU Copyright. Furthermore, the article points out problems which are neglected in the present discussion.
