Summary
This article, written just a few years before the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, looks back at how the anniversaries of the Reformation were celebrated in Germany in the Nineteeth Century (1800–1918). First, (1a) it looks at who took the initiative and carried out the celebrations within Protestantism and (1b) what were their leading concepts and ideas. Second, it takes up (2a) how Roman Catholics and (2b) Jews reacted to these celebrations.
