Summary
Karl Holl's speech on »Luther's understanding of Religion« at the University of Berlin's Reformation celebration in 1917 was a landmark in twentieth century Reformation re-search, and an inaugurating component of the »Luther Renaissance«. The essay places the speech in the historical context of the First World War, reveals its theological-historical background and deals with the important role it played in Holl's theological oeuvre.
