Summary
Between 1820 and 1834 the Prussian Awakening, which developed in the years after the wars of liberation and then spread from Berlin to the provinces, increasingly attracted the attention of the public authorities. Based on unpublished documents, this article shows how King Friedrich Wilhelm III and his Minister of Church Affairs Altenstein tried to exercise an influence on the Awakening Movement and how Prussia's centralist and absolutist religious policy thereby reached its limits.
