Summary
This article studies the understanding of Europe in the Protestant churches in Europe and draws on the concepts of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE). For a long time, Europe was seen merely as the area in which the participating churches in the Leuenberg Concord made their church community a reality. Compared with a concept of Europe which was becoming too dominant, the CPCE was cautious. After 1990 how ever European and European issues became important. Europe has now been specified as a »space to live and to create.« Thus, the first outlines of a Protestant concept are emerging.
