Summary
Current research commonly holds that the Roman traditionalists were among the most dangerous opponents of Christians in the first centuries. This essay, on the other hand, aims to demonstrate that the Christian intellectuals or educated, whose importance has so far been underestimated, accepted many ideas of the ancient Roman conservatives to a surprisingly large extent in their critique of society – from the spectacles, for example and accused them of undermining their own ideals by disrespecting these. The true Romans were the Christians who practised ancient Roman ideals without restrictions.
