Summary
A joint appointment is when a scientist is simultaneously appointed to a W2 or W3 professorship at a university and is to be used in a management or research position at a (usually locally neighboring) non-university research institution. If universities and non-university research institutions cooperate to jointly appoint and fill a professorship, two variants with different gradations are common in practice: They differ according to whether the tasks at the non-university research institution are performed within the framework of an employment relationship with the university or an employment relationship with the research institution. The article presents the different models and examines them comprehensively under the various aspects of higher education law concerned.
