Summary
Gregory the Great's Moralia in Iob was far and away the most influential commentary on the book of Job in the Middle Ages. This essay explores the nature of the Job story as Gregory received it and considers the direct and indirect, intended and unintended consequences of Gregory's exegesis for centuries after his work was completed. In so doing, this article shows in a brief compass what might be entailed in the study of the afterlife of a biblical text.
