Summary
This exploration of the as-yet unedited letters of Johann Peter Miller (1725 – 1789) addressed to Thomas Abbt (1738 – 1766) provide insight into Miller's understanding of erudition. What becomes obvious is that he participated in crucial aspects of this understanding's transformation during the age of Enlightenment while maintaining his Christian outlook on life. The fluid contour of theological enlightenment can thus be widened by considering Miller's formal practice of his own convictions and the origins of today's pedagogy can be traced.
