Summary
The 'Preußische Agendenstreit' 1822–1840 was the biggest controversy in 19th century German Protestantism. Oddly enough neither contemporaries nor historians ever tried to give a critical account of the Agende itself, as the liturgical sources it was composed of seemed unknown. Recently discovered material from Prussian Archives however shows that the king deliberately composed his liturgy of liturgical texts and elements used in the ecumenical victory celebrations of 1814/15, thus making the Prussian liturgy a monumentum aere perennius of the military alliance of orthodox Russia, Catholic Austria, Protestant Prussia and Anglican England in the wars of liberation. As also Neo-Gallican traditions were used in the Prussian liturgy, it may even have been intended as the nucleus of a common liturgy of the Holy Alliance.
