J. J. Spalding's work »The Destination of Man«, at the theology of the Enlightenment bestseller, was published for the first time in 1748 and was thoroughly critized by J. M. Goeze in the same year. In his study, the author provides a detailed reconstruction of this early dispute surrounding theological Enlightenment, based on the sources available, and enlarges upon the constructive consequences which Spalding drew from this.
