Summary
The essay elaborates the biographical and theological-historical background of the lecture fragment entitled »Breaking up – turning back – confessing«, on which Karl Barth worked until the night of his death. Barth shows himself to be an interested and critical observer of the developments within the Roman Catholic Church in the context of Vatican II. The author shows that Barth's reference to the Exodus motif is more aimed at a »theology of freedom« with ecumenical intent than a »theology of liberation".
