Summary
In this book, the author examines the idea of sin in the Gospel of John. The theme of sin in John has been overlooked in the last few years, and thus this work is an important contribution to the field of Johannine soteriology. The author examines all the relevant evidence on the concept of 'sin', and it becomes clear that the confrontation between God and the unbelieving world, which is implied in the prologue, constitutes the horizon for the unfolding of the idea of sin. The Fourth Gospel develops a pronounced understanding of manifestation, in which sin is dealt with not as a legal offence or a moral transgression but rather as a total contradiction of God's manifestation in Jesus Christ. The fact that Jesus Christ gave his life as atonement makes it obvious that the legal dispute between God and the unbelieving world was decided in favor of God, his manifestation and his community.
