The statutory action for damages for adultery was one of the most controversial features of English law in its time: after 1857 and until 1970 it allowed a husband to sue his wife's lover for monetary compensation. Eike Hosemann examines a chapter of English legal history in which sexual norms, gender roles and the marriage ideal of a bygone era are vividly reflected.
