On 1 March 2001, the Brussels II Regulation took effect in the member states of the E.U. (with the exception of Denmark). Its objective was to accelerate and simplify the recognition and order of enforcement of decisions concerning family law from other member states. Isabella Maria Niklas deals with the provisions laid down in the Brussels II Regulation in regard to international jurisdiction. In addition to a systematic analysis of the European jurisdiction system, she also compares the effects of the Brussels II Regulation on the allocation of competences by the German family courts with national procedural law.
