Summary
The texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus were long venerated as an ancient source of divine wisdom. Due to the fact that it is written in Latin and its doctrine is complex, the Asclepius occupies a special position among these texts. Today, Hermeticism is seen as the fruit of the encounter between Greeks and Egyptians in a period of history which longed both for a reconciliation between the two cultures and for salvation via the creation of a unity of religion and philosophy.
