In this volume, Kyriaki Archavlis examines how speech is implicated with the law. With reference to John L. Austin and John Searle's work on the Speech Act Theory, she deals with the philosophy of speech as it has been applied in both older and more modern theories of German civil law dating from 1900, and reveals how linguistic pre-understanding unconsciously influenced legal solutions.
