How can one think functionally in theology without reducing thoughts of God and experiences of God to functions? Based on a linguistic-philosophical examination of A. Ritschl's (1822–1889) liberal theology, Katharina Opalka shows how narratives in a religious context become functionally effective. As practicing humility shows, they do however remain dependent on unexpected performance experiences.
