The cultivation of a »state aesthetic« (Staatsästhetik) is not a German virtue, at least not in the wake of the wars fought and lost, and the Nazi atrocities. Despite this, many of the same ways and means, procedures, developments, organisations – whether by accident or design – have emerged. Taken together, these amount to an equivalent »aesthetic« in the post-war German democracy.
