There are many reasons to study economics, and sometimes chance plays a part in making the decision. Rudolf Richter, who helped the New Institutional Economics to its breakthrough in the 1970s and 80s and as an important representative of his field contributed to the internationalization of German political economy, recalls in an open-hearted, reflective and entertaining manner how his discipline developed from 1945 onwards. He portrays the trials and tribulations of this time from the point of view of a dedicated university lecturer, who believes that reason will triumph - if not immediately, then just a little later.
