Summary

Adam B. Seligman describes how feelings of differentness and group membership are constructed socially and shows the challenges arising as a result of this to tolerance and cooperation between different groups. Linda Woodhead shows that values in Western societies have gradually assumed the classical functions of religion. She traces the historical origins of this development and sheds light on the consequences of this for value systems and for religion and the church.
