Summary
The general rules of international law constitute a unique layer of law within the German legal system: They rank between federal statutory and constitutional law. This has not always been the case. Originally, general rules of international law were supposed to take precedence over constitutional law as well. The book analyses the 'intermediate rank' from a historical perspective, reflecting a process of political reorientation during the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany.
