The journal was founded in 1927 by Ernst Rabel as the key German forum for fundamental research in the field of private, economic and procedural law in their international aspects. Areas of specific interest are thus comparative law and foreign law in comparative analysis, the conflict of laws, the law of international transactions and the unification of law, including the law of the European Union.
The journal sees itself as a forum of international academic discourse and intellectual exchange with foreign research. It publishes fundamental articles (in German, English and French) from all fields of work covered by the Institute.
As of 2024 the Rabel Journal is available in Open Access.”

Acceptance for publication will be given in writing condition that the article is original unpublished work that has not been submitted for publication elsewhere.
However, preprint versions of manuscripts may be placed online by authors under the following conditions:
- Only the first version submitted to RabelsZ may appear online, not any subsequent versions that have been changed as a result of the review process. The preprint version must not merely be an unformatted version of the final article destined for publication.
- After publication, reference must be made to the published version of the article and its DOI stated. The preprint may remain online when "preprint version before editing" is added.
- The contributions may not be posted collectively - each author is to post his or her preprint individually.
Exclusive copyright to articles is granted to Mohr Siebeck when they are accepted for publication in our journals and edited volumes. Mohr Siebeck has the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute the contribution as well as to make it publicly accessible online. As author you retain the right to distribute the e-offprint of your contribution for private use (e.g., via e-mail), but not to make it accessible to the public - e.g., at any website, intranet or repository.
For articles in journals, exclusivity falls away one year following publication, for chapters in edited volumes after two years. Correspondingly, you may then (a) reproduce and distribute a print version of your contribution; (b) grant another publisher non-exclusive permission to reprint an article following its publication with us; (c) make the print identical version accessible online for non-commercial purposes only. In all cases, full reference is to be made to the original Mohr Siebeck publication and, for journal contributions where applicable, mention made of the article's DOI (Digital Object Identifier).
