Handbuch zum Neuen Testament

The Handbuch zum Neuen Testament, founded by Hans Lietzmann in 1906, edited by Günther Bornkamm from 1949 until 1982 and since then until 2023 by Andreas Lindemann, is a commentary series on the writings of the New Testament and the Apostolic Fathers based on historical-critical exegesis. The Handbuch's authors are not committed to any particular theological agenda; their aim is to interpret the texts in a concentrated form in their commentaries – reliably, philologically accurate and in the context of the history of religion. All the commentaries are limited to one single volume.
In accordance with the Handbuch's tradition, the context of the texts in the history of religion and intellectual history is of particular importance; this enables those readers who are preparing lessons or sermons to read up on the historical and exegetical problems of a text. The theological significance of the annotated writings is described and discussed in such a manner that the reader will be able to do his or her own interpretation.
