Summary
The specific conditions of increased societal pluralization at the beginning of the 21st century have seen criminal law faced with new challenges. Fateh-Moghadam develops religious-ideological neutrality in contrast to tolerance as the basic concept of criminal law which is able to deal with difficulties resulting from such pluralization of modern societies. It is the mode of neutrality which allows criminal law to treat religiously affected problems such as male circumcision, the Islamic face veil or the role of religion within criminal procedure without itself becoming party to these conflicts.
