Summary
Was it possible to live a Christian life in the ancient polis? This question was a recurring one for the church fathers. One particularly vocal critic of urban life in late antiquity was John Chrysostom (c. 349‒407), who was active in two of the most vibrant metropolises of the time, Antioch and Constantinople. Jan R. Stenger examines how Chrysostom portrayed the city in his homilies and writings as well as the rhetorical strategies that the preacher employed in order to transform the polis into a Christian community.
